PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE

Peter Mikesell is a registered patent agent at Schmeiser, Olsen & Watts LLP. His focus is on the drafting and prosecution of patent applications before the United States Patent and Trademark Office. His educational background and industrial experience makes him particularly well suited to prosecute patents in the areas of synthetic chemistry, material science and biotechnology.

Peter graduated from Illinois State University in 1995, earning a Bachelor of Science in chemistry. He spent several years working in industrial research facilities developing custom polymers before being licensed to practice patent law before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). He received a Ph.D. in organic chemistry from the University of California, Santa Barbara, where he researched synthetic electrochemistry and natural product synthesis with a particular emphasis on biologically active natural products.

Since becoming a licensed U.S. patent agent in 2003, Peter has worked with a wide variety of clients ranging in size from independent inventors to fortune 500 companies. He has both defended and sought to invalidate numerous patents in reexamination proceedings before the USPTO. Peter also has extensive experience in the procedural rules imposed by the USPTO and provides pragmatic advice to his clients. Additionally, Peter has experience performing patentability searches, state-of-the-art searches, patent reexaminations and filing international patent applications.
